Quick product information for CatCam®:
Function: The CatCam® takes pictures or short videoclips (new feature) in an adjustable time sequence/interval. If no picture is taken, the camera is switched off to save battery energy. It is designed to be worn on the collar of an animal (cat) but may find use for general surveillance tasks as well.
Size and weight: The CatCam® offers a small size of 6 x 4 x 2.5cm (2.4 x 1.6 x 1 inch) and a weight of approx. 60 grams (2.5 oz) including standard battery. By stripping the original camera housing the size and weight can be reduced by roughly 10%.
Time between pictures: Interval can be set between 5 seconds and 8 hours. This is done using the On/Off switch of the camera. Although the time can be set freely, it is not practical to adjust longer time intervals using this method. Please ask for factory preset.
Picture storage: Pictures are stored in JPEG format. The picture pixel size is 1280x1024. Since the amount of pictures can be very high, the preferred method is storage to an additional SD Flash memory card. This card is not part of the CatCam and must be ordered separately. The maximum size supported by the camera is 2GB (512MB in older models). The camera provides only 8MB of internal RAM. This can hold up to 20-25 pictures. Another drawback of the internal memory is that pictures are lost if battery gets empty.
Please note that the pictures are upside down. This is because the lens is placed at the maximum distance from collar to provide the best view.
Picture download: Pictures are downloaded to a computer using Mini-USB interface or SD card reader.
Optics: The optical system provides a viewing angle which is equal to roughly 35mm on a standard camera. The focus can be manually adjusted on the camera from near field to far. If the desired focus distance can not be achieved externally, the lens can be adjusted even more by opening the camera system.
Supply: The standard camera is powered by an AAA battery. Since the camera requires a lot of energy it is recommended to use rechargeable batteries. Please consider high capacitive NiMh types which offer 900mAh or more. The camera can be modified to a larger battery size (AA). This larger size multiplies the capacity (2700mAh or more).
Please consider by using rechargeable batteries that the low battery symbol will come on early. This is no sign that the battery is already empty; rechargeable batteries have usually a lower voltage which is interpreted wrong by the camera software.
The supply is not limited to 1.5V or 1.2V battery cells. Batteries with voltages up to 3.3V like Lithium cells are supported by the internal booster circuit.
Performance during low light: The camera is not equipped with a flash. No pictures are taken during complete darkness. Additionally the low light performance is low. Please expect no sharp pictures in shadow/low ambient light situations.
Housing: The camera comes with a protective housing. This is required to protect the camera from the sometimes harsh environment. The housing is mechanical shock resistant and provides a soft surface without sharp edges. During normal application it closes out dust and water (but is not water tight). With additional measurements it can be sealed against water.
The lens hole is covered with an exchangeable window to provide always a good vision. The camera is placed upside down in the housing for best results. This ensures that the head of the animal does not cover the field of view.
The housing material is 80% transparent. This allows application of camouflage features.
Collar attachment: The housing is equipped with metal reinforced straps which allows a secure attachment to a collar. Secure means that the animal is not hurt and the camera does not get lost easily.
Noise emission: None.
Product classification: It is not a series product. Please consider the CatCam as an experimental device. The camera passes several tests prior to shipping, this makes it more relyable than the original product.
